Ready, Set, Library

Every year, the American Library Association and libraries across the United States mark a week in early April to celebrate National Library Week. This year, “Ready, Set, Library!” takes place April 7 through 13 and highlights the right to read, celebrates the workers who provide programs and services – both in the library and out in the community – and encourages those who love their library to act on their behalf.

Libraries are at the intersection of freedom and education and your voice matters during a time when there has been an uptick in book bans across the country. Today is National Right to Read Day, a call to action for readers and library advocates to unite against books bans in their communities – here is how you can get involved.

The work of libraries hinges on the people who play a critical role in keeping them running. Many people in Temple and Bell County have shared words of gratitude for Temple library workers. To take action on April 9 for National Library Workers Day, you can nominate a library worker as Stars for the ALA-APA Galaxy of Stars. Submit a star library worker here and see the list from all Texas libraries.

National Library Outreach Day is April 10 and highlights the dedicated professionals who meet patrons where they are. Whether it is a bookmobile stop at a local elementary school, daycare or senior center, or a pop-up at gatherings around town, these services are essential to the community. Learn more about the outreach services provided by Temple Public Library and help us mark the new bookmobile for the Temple community this fall! Sign up for the TPL eNews to stay in the loop.

Finish out the week by joining with other readers and library advocates to participate in elections as part of Take Action for Libraries Day on April 11. Libraries are nonpartisan, but they are not indifferent. The nation’s libraries play a critical role in our democracy, encouraging readers, educating voters, and preparing all of us to participate in elections. See the Texas Library Association’s election information for links to your county elections office, registration and voting dates, guides, and more.

Without YOU, the National Library Week celebration would not be possible. Thank you for supporting Temple Public Library and highlighting the valuable role it plays in transforming lives and strengthening community.
